South Shore Bike Month - June 2023

June 2023 is a community celebration of cycling for recreation, transportation, and sport. The Town of Bridgewater, the Bridgewater Active Transportation Committee, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, and various businesses, organizations and volunteers are partnering to offer the South Shore’s biggest and best Bike Month. Some of these events are being organized for Bike Month and some are simply promotions of events already planned! Below is a calendar of some of the events as well as a list with all the details for each event.

Saturday, June 3 - 9am to 12pm - Free

Bridgewater Farmer’s Market (123 Empire St, Bridgewater)

Stop by the Farmers’ Market on Saturday morning to check out the Bike Month Info Booth for all the information you’ll need to join in on the Bike Month fun as well as some local cycling route information!

 

Bike to School
Monday, May 29 - Friday, June 2 - Free

DesBrisay Museum (130 Jubilee Rd, Bridgewater)

Kids can join daily supervised bike to school rides starting at the DesBrisay Museum in Bridgewater at 7:45am and arriving at the Bridgewater Elementary and Junior High Schools in time for class.

Commuting by Bike Workshop
Saturday, June 3 – 9am to 1pm - $25+tax (pre-registration is required)

Bridgewater Town Hall (60 Pleasant St, Bridgewater)

(for adults OR children & youth accompanied by an adult)

There’s no better time to learn how to swap out your car commute for a bike commute to work or school. The instructor will cover rules of the road, what to wear, and more! Participants will need to bring their own bike and helmet. Course consists of 1 hour in class, 1 hour parking lot, and 1 hour cycling. Sign up on connect2rec.com

 

Storybook Trail 
Anytime May 20 to June 7 - Free

Glen Allan Park (146 Glen Allan Dr, Bridgewater)

Take a walk through the woods and read “City Streets are for People”. This fun, accessible and hopeful illustrated book explores sustainable transportation, including electric vehicles, public transit, bicycles, walking and more. It invites you to conjure a city of the future, where these modes are all used together to create a place that is sustainable, healthy, accessible and safe. (See below for an art workshop about this book).

 

Michelin Junior Bike
Saturday, June 3 - 10am to 12pm – Free (pre-registration is required)

LCLC (135 North Park St, Bridgewater)

Michelin will be hosting their annual Junior Bike event for kids. Participants will receive a free bicycle helmet and a chance to win one of two gift cards for a new bike! For more information and to register by March 31st, go to https://www.michelinjuniorbike.ca/.

 

Women on Wheels Rides

Women on Wheels (WoW) organizes rides for women, trans, femme and non-binary riders to ride together, and WoW Lunenburg has several ride options that are taking place Mondays in June.

Family Movie - Luca
Sunday, June 4 - 2pm to 4pm – Free (picking up tickets in advance is required)

Michelin Social Club (221 Logan Road, Bridgewater)

Enjoy a family movie, free popcorn and a beverage! Bicycle parking is available in front of the Michelin Social Club. Don’t forget to pick up your tickets at the Michelin Social Club in advance!

Luca is set in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera. A young boy and his friend experience an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta, endless scooter rides, and a bicycle race, but all the fun is threatened by a secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.

 

Beach Yoga
Every Wednesday in June (weather dependent) – Free for people arriving by bike

Oakland Conservation Area Beach (1011 Oakland Road, Oakland)

Free Transit with Bicycle
Monday, June 5 to Saturday, June 10

Ride Bridgewater Transit for free at the beginning of Bike Month when you put your bike on the bus! Whether you’re going for a ride after you get off, or biking to reach the bus, there’s a bike rack available to help extend your journey. Art Workshop - City Streets are for People
Thursday, June 8 - 4pm to 6pm - $15 (pre-registration is required)

People who have big thoughts and dreams about transportation will enjoy this read along of “City Streets are for People”, the third book in author Andrea Curtis’ ThinkCity Series published by Groundwood Books. Emma Fitzgerald will share some of her process in making the illustrations of transportation around the world, and then participants will be able to dream up in drawing and watercolour format their vision for transportation in Bridgewater, and beyond! The Monthly Cycle Ride
Friday, June 16 - 6pm – Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic (68 Bluenose Dr), Lunenburg - Free

Join for a social bike ride for women/trans/femme & non-binary riders. Travel from Lunenburg to Mason's Beach and  head back the way we came. We will stop at Lightship Brewery / Boathouse Bites for a snack or a drink at the end of the ride (buy your own - food and drink not provided by The Monthly Cycle). Don't forget your lights as you might be heading home after dark.  The Monthly Cycle rides are no-drop, so the chillest rider sets the pace at the back of the group.

E-bike and Electric Vehicle (EV) Try-It
Saturday, June 24 - 9am to 12pm – Free 

Bridgewater Farmer’s Market (123 Empire St, Bridgewater)

Have you ever tried an electric bicycle? Here’s your opportunity to see if it’s something that works for you! The Clean Foundation’s Next Ride program will be set up at the Farmer’s Market with an e-bike and electric vehicles. You simply try out the bike while you're there. And advanced sign-up is available for the EV through the Clean Foundation website (link to come) or see if there’s a walk-in spot.

Active Transportation Committee 

 The AT Committee works to support active transportation in Bridgewater by (a) consulting with, advising, and making recommendations to Town Council, (b) creating and influencing public policy, (c) improving infrastructure, (d) supporting and promoting community programs, (e) increasing partnerships and building capacity in the community, and (f) developing relevant tools and materials associated with active transportation policy, infrastructure and program implementation in Bridgewater.

Bridgewater's Active Transportation Plan

The vision of the plan is that walking, wheeling and cycling are safe, convenient and enjoyable ways to move around Bridgewater for users of all ages and abilities and are a common part of everyday life.
